Flanders Field

Are you having trouble getting members involved? YES, seems to be the apparent answer from every Post. Communicate with your members about what functions are happening at your Post, in the community, in your District, and you must make them aware of the programs which you are working. Besides the current programs your Post or unit may be working, let them know the other programs that are available. You might find people are interested in certain types of things, and they may take an interest. If your membership doesn't have the information or knowledge of something, then you can't expect them to just be there. Find out what your members would like to see happen. There is a lot more to a good Legion Post, than just the bar. Make your new members feel welcome, and see if they are interested in helping out. So often, we hear "I didn't know about that, nobody asked me". Try an open house or something and show your membership that you do have a interest in their commitment to serving God and Country. Set-up a special contact/reach out committee, to make contact with members by utilizing a phone bank and/or letter writing campaign. Find out what they would like to see or do, in order to "come on down".

Broken Promises To Forgotten Heros

We went off to fight a war, to keep our country free.
We were sent to foreign lands, far across the sea.
We didn't back down, we stayed and fought,
and paid a heavy price,
Our bodies were maimed, tortured and killed,
the cost of war was high.

Throughout the wars, we were there,
we never thought to run.
Fighting for our country, no promise left undone.
We are the Veterans of America,
and we stand proud and tall.
We never broke our promise, we joined the battles call.

Our government made us promises,
if we would fight their war,
Benefits and services, would be ours for ever more.
As time is slowly passing, our benefits have decreased.
While our government officials, their pay they do increase.

If you can't believe the promises,
your country made to you,
What is left to believe in, is nothing really true ?
We kept our part of the bargain,
we kept freedom here today.
Now it's time for our government,
to live up to what they say.

Please take care of your Veterans today,
Don't let government take more away.
Our Veterans were there in time of war,
It's now time to say, don't take any more.
Start keeping your promises today,
It's a debt you can never repay!

Military Tribute

A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease..

I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.

I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil
How many mothers' tears?

How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of Taps one night,
When everything was still,
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That Taps had meant "Amen,"

When a flag had draped a coffin.
Of a brother or a friend.

I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.

I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea

Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.

Medal Ceremony, Dec. 16th held at Congressman Rob Simmons' Norwich, CT. office. Long over due medals were presented to Veterans from WWII and the Korean Wars.
